MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Minimum of 21 years of age.
  2. Hold a valid Washington State driver’s license (current license to remain on file)
  3. Submit a current driver’s abstract for past 5 years
  4. Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities as described in this job description.
  5. Be certified in first aid/CPR (current copy must remain on file)
  6. Complete an annual disclosure statement (renew annually)
  7. Pass F.B.I. and Washington State Patrol Criminal Record Checks
  8. Complete the SafeSchools Training videos:
  • Defensive Driving (21 MIN)
  • Distracted Driving (14 MIN)
  • City Driving (17 MIN)
  • Winter Driving (17 MIN)
  • Van Safety (28 MIN)

VAN DRIVER DESIRED BACKGROUND/SKILLS

  1. Possession of a good driving safety record.
  2. Have the ability to concentrate on safe, defensive driving under various distracting circumstances.
  3. Positive attitude toward students, parents, teachers and other district staff members.
  4. Team oriented; ability to work with a variety of people.
  5. Ability to work with and sensitivity to cultural, developmental, religious and ethnic diversity of students, staff, and community
  6. Effective communication skills.
  7. Writing skills necessary to complete transportation/driver paperwork.
  8. Ability to read and interpret maps.
  9. Flexibility to accept scheduling changes as necessary to meet district needs.
  10. Willingness and ability to receive periodic retraining and updating of driving skills.
  11. Willingness and ability to drive a van as directed by the transportation supervisor in any type of weather.
  12. Willingness and ability to perform cleaning and upkeep on the vans.
  13. Maintain knowledge and understanding of proper operation of transportation equipment, including special education transportation equipment.
  14. Sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a van through the passenger service door, and provide necessary assistance in an emergency situation and/or evacuation.
  15. Knowledge of safety standards, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to pupil transportation as required in the Washington State Handbook. This includes maintaining necessary certifications and endorsements and keeping them in your possession at all times.

VAN DRIVER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Each van driver is responsible to know, understand and follow the transportation office policies and procedures.

 

Each driver must read, understand and follow:

  1. The Motor Vehicles Laws of the State of Washington.
  2. All regulations and Washington State Laws for School Bus Drivers.
  3. The State of Washington School Bus Driver Handbook.
  4. The Toledo School District’s School Bus Driver Handbook.
  5. Rules for students riding Toledo School buses.

Each driver will:

  1. Be able to proficiently operate vans in the Toledo School District.
  2. Operate vans in a safe and prudent manner.
  3. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, district staff, parents and community members.

 

VAN DRIVER SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Operate a district vehicle in a safe and legal manner consistent with district, state, county and federal regulations.
  2. Inspect the assigned van daily prior to each operation in accordance with state and district regulations and expectations.
  3. Maintain discipline on the van consistent with district policies, regulations and procedures.
  4. Support the learning program and contribute to the growth and development of students through maintenance of positive interpersonal relationships.
  5. Maintain and submit daily van logs, and complete all forms and other reports as required.
  6. Report any mechanical defects and safety hazards immediately.
  7. Clean interior and exterior of vehicle according to department procedures and perform other such maintenance requirements as department procedure requires.
  8. Operate and maintain district vehicles and equipment as required; consequently insuring their safe and proper use, protecting the interest of the district regarding pilferage, loss, theft or abuse of all district vehicles, equipment and materials.
  9. Maintain appropriate physical condition, health status, appearance and attitude necessary to perform duties and responsibilities.
  10. Obtain and maintain all licenses and certificates necessary to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities.
  11. Comply with district safety rules and regulations
  12. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
  13. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  14. Wash/vacuum vehicles
  15. Answer phones and radio 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Work year shall be concurrent with the school calendar
  • Salary determined by placement on the adopted salary schedule
  • Initial ninety day probationary period according to bargaining unit contract
